FAQ

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a trending ingredient in the natural products industry. It’s one of the many compounds found in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) and is gaining more and more popularity for the numerous medicinal uses it has had over the past few years. We need more research, but CBD oil [without the compound that gives you the “high” while using cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)], may prove to be an option for managing anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain. CBD is not intoxicating but may cause some drowsiness.

How do you take CBD?

There are many ways to take CBD, the most common of which are topically and orally. Within these categories are different delivery methods such as tinctures, creams, and more. If you've never taken CBD before, ingesting it is an easy place to start. Dosage is important and having a consistent concentration makes it easy to find out what works for you. Monitoring dosage is simple with tinctures because they come in pre-measured sizes. This oil is used to help relieve anxiety and to assist with pain. Generally, you consume a tincture by placing it under your tongue and holding it there for up to a minute as it dissolves. Some people even use it in their food, or add a few drops to their favorite smoothie recipe. It's easy to adjust the dose by adding or subtracting a few drops, and it typically works much faster than capsules or gummies. So far, no serious safety concerns have been associated with moderate doses. CBD is thought to have the potential to interact with some drugs, so please check with your doctor if you take other medications or herbal supplements.

How is the CBD extracted for the products made by Hummingbird Farms Botanicals?

Hummingbird Farms Botanicals (in partnership with SunX Analytics in Cambridge MD) uses ethanol extraction to produce cannabis oil with up to 99 percent purity. The general process includes heating the hemp plant material to obtain decarboxylation — a key step for efficient production of the main active components in cannabis — and then soaking the plant material in ethanol for a specific amount of time. Once the time’s elapsed, the final solution is filtered in order to separate the liquids from the solid plant matter. Then the ethanol is distilled off and you are left with the crude hemp extract oil. Ethanol is a plant-based solvent and many experts believe ethanol cannabis extraction is the most efficient method for maintaining the chemical ratios which naturally exist in hemp. Ethanol not only extracts water but also the oil-soluble compounds such as chlorophyll, which closely mirrors hemoglobin and offers similar, if not more, health benefits. Chlorophyll can be somewhat grassy and bitter tasting, but keep in mind that additional filtration of chlorophyll may reduce the CBD oil’s potency. Probably the most prominent benefit of ethanol cannabis extraction is the ability to maintain the “entourage effect” from the plant compounds and their effect on the endocannabinoid system. It's reasonable to suggest that the higher potency of the CBD-rich Cannabis extracts over purified CBD is related to other plant compounds acting synergistically to CBD which are water-soluble, making them highly bioavailable — i.e., they are easily absorbed by the human body.

What if i find a speck of mold in my flower?

At Hummingbird Farms Botanicals we pride ourselves with a triple inspection process. All our product is microbial lab tested for fungal spores and safety. Occasionally, as with all agricultural products, there could be a speck we missed that is hidden. Please contact us and we will promptly replace your product. We want our customers to be happy and satisfied!

What if I find seeds in my hemp flower purchase?

At Hummingbird Farms Botanicals we grow all female plants with no pollination occurring, resulting in zero seeds. Once in a while, though, seeds can form in plants with genetic instability that become hermaphrodites—plants that develop both male and female reproductive parts. We obviously try to weed these plants out, but sometimes a seed or two will develop. This will not affect the potency of your flower, simply remove and discard the pesky seed.
